While Veterans’ Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans, and Memorial Day honors those who died serving in American wars, Saturday, May 16th is Armed Forces Day. President Truman led the effort for this holiday to honor those currently serving in the U.S. military. Armed Forces Day was first celebrated May 1950. Then in 1961, President Kennedy signed a proclamation declaring it a national holiday to be celebrated on every 3rd Saturday in May.
